On May 24, 2014, UW-CFL and Shedd researchers, staff, and volunteers will engage guests when they visit the aquarium, providing information on the importance of fish migrations to both people and the environment. Guest engagement includes poster presentations on current research, free migratory fishes “passports” for kids as part of a “worldwide” scavenger hunt throughout the aquarium, and free WFMD stickers.

Shedd Aquarium and University of Wisconsin-Madison Center for Limnology (UW-CFL) have teamed up for a World Fish Migration Day (WFMD) event hosted at Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, Illinois.Both organizations have current migratory fishes research programs, including collaborations on Great Lakes migratory fishes. Shedd maintains dozens of migratory fishes on site in its collection, and will highlight several of these species for WFMD.
 

On May 24, 2014, UW-CFL and Shedd researchers, staff, and volunteers will engage guests when they visit the aquarium, providing information on the importance of fish migrations to both people and the environment.

Guest engagement includes:

-Poster presentation stations on current research by UW-CFL and Shedd researchers. Main topics include: Different types of fish migrations, why fish migrate and what happens if they cannot, Barriers to fish migrations and solutions, how we study fish migrations.

-Free migratory fishes “passports” for kids as part of a “worldwide” scavenger hunt throughout the aquarium. Passports will be stamped at 5 different migratory fishes exhibits; fully stamped passports will be eligible to win a migratory fishes prize! 2,000 passports will be available on site, and a downloadable version will be available on the Shedd and UW-CFL websites.

-Scientist cut-outs for kids. Life-size posters of scientists in the field holding migratory fishes; faces will be cut out so kids can pose as fish scientists and have their photo taken by a family member.

-Free WFMD stickers for guests as they leave the aquarium.
