My name is Maarten Flikweert, I am an ecologist who specializes in biodiversity. I became interested in fish after I got a job to manage the fish stocks in Amsterdam and surroundings. Via this job I became one of the many volunteers to monitor glass eel in Amsterdam each year. The glass eel research connected me to the first World Fish Migration Day in 2014. I have been a supporter of this initiative ever since.
I have become aware of a problem in the Netherlands: all the waterways and barriers used to be operated directly by people, that had direct contact with visible fish migration. These people are now being replaced by advanced computer systems. These technical systems do not have the care and feedback that these people used to provide: they cannot respond in the same way to fish migration yet.
