Migratory Fish and Fish Passage at Holyoke Dam, Connecticut River, MA
A 1 hour tour (begins 2:30 pm on Sunday, 29 May 2022) of two Fishlifts at Holyoke Dam (also known as Hadley Falls Dam) to observe diverse migratory fishes be lifted over the dam and allowed to swim upstream to spawn or rear. We can observe operation of the fishlifts and can see fish swimming upstream in a long channel with a plexiglass side that makes seeing fish easy. We should see many pre-spawning American shad and sea lamprey and perhaps river herring and diverse migratory freshwater fish species. Various aspects of passing fish in the fishlifts will be discussed. Effect of hydropower dams on migratory fishes will be discussed along with FERC (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission) license requirements during the recent relicensing of the electricity generating facilities associated with Holyoke Dam and canals, Hadley Falls Station.
