Crow Creek Fish Passage & Eastern Brook Trout Restoration
Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper, in partnership with the US Fish and Wildlife’s Lower Great Lakes Office, the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, and Wyoming County, is kicking off a restoration project to eliminate an impassable barrier and enhance habitat for native or naturalized Eastern Brook Trout. This project is the culmination of over 7 years of planning, inventory, design, and partnership to increase the number of stream miles as well as improve the quality of habitat available to native aquatic species. Located within a headwater tributary of the Niagara River watershed, this project will install a new culvert that is adequately sized for stream volumes, properly embedded, and in alignment with the stream channel. We will construct in-stream habitat features including lunker boxes and grade control structures. Mobilization for this project kicks off on May 20, 2022 and is accompanied by a virtual campaign to raise awareness and support for headwater stream conservation in Western New York throughout June of 2022.
