Run Free. River connectivity in blue dot catchment area.
Run Free is a World Fish Migration Day 2026 action focused on restoring river connectivity in a blue dot catchment area of the Mill River (Owenkillew catchment), Buncrana, Co. Donegal.
The Gransha Dam and its impassable fish pass currently block migratory species including Atlantic salmon, sea trout, eel, and other native fish, fragmenting the river system and damaging ecological connectivity in a high-value river corridor.
This event will include:
Creation of a short documentary film highlighting the barrier and its ecological impact
On-site filming and documentation at the dam and fish pass
Public awareness through digital and community media
Launch of a funding and support initiative to engage a hydro-ecology specialist to assess the structure and develop restoration solutions
Run Free aims to reconnect habitats, restore natural migration pathways, and support science-led river restoration that allows rivers — and the life within them — to move freely again.
