Swim to Survive: Celebrating Fish Migration in the Himalayas
This event aims to celebrate World Fish Migration Day by engaging children, youth, and the public in understanding the fascinating journeys of migratory fish species across the Himalayas, with a special focus on Kashmir’s freshwater ecosystems. Activities will include:
DIY Fish Migration Tunnel Model – where students design and test small-scale models of fish passages using recycled materials.
Fish Migration Board Game – a creative learning tool that lets players experience the challenges migratory fish face from dams, pollution, and habitat loss.
Fish Migration Obstacle Course – an outdoor activity simulating barriers fish encounter during upstream migration.
Interactive Talks and Storytelling Sessions on migratory species, climate impacts, and traditional ecological knowledge from Himalayan communities. The programme will target school students (ages 6–16), local youth, and families to raise awareness about river connectivity, aquatic biodiversity, and conservation challenges in mountain ecosystems. The event will also serve as a follow-up to the successful “Junior Fish Guardians” outreach initiative organized under the ZGAP-supported project on “Ecology and migration patterns of the Himalayan loach using radio telemetry techniques.”
