Upstream – a trading game with a fishy-twist
The scouts are playing a trading game with a fishy-twist: “Upstream” (Nl: Stroomopwaarts). Specifically made for World Fish migration day by one of the leaders. In a playfull way, the scouts will learn about migratory fish species and the challenges they face swimming upstream.
Every group is steward of a species (Eel, Sturgeon, Trout and Salmon), with the goal to get obstacles in the river out of the way before the fish get there. Obstacles such as fishery, sea sluices, industrial discharge, and (disused) weirs. They need to hire specialist to develop solutions for each of these. For each obstacle a different set of specialist is needed. For example: to remove a dam you need a contractor, to develop a “kierbesluit” (NL) (like at the Haringvlietsluizen) you will need more ecological advisors, and to deal with factories permits are needed. But, as in the real world, some specialist are expensive or hard to come by. On top of that money doesn’t grow on trees, so they will need to apply for grands at the EU. For each application they is a fish-related activity to do. They better they do, the more money they get.
So: be tactical, be quick, and be aware of fish, and what we humans can do to help them.
This activity is for members of Scouting Ruwaard van Putten only. We will post about it on our socials: Facebook “WolvenTroepRvP” and Instagram “wolvenrvp”.
