In September 2018, “one of the most significant dam removal and river restoration projects took place in the [USA],” says president of American Rivers, Bob Irving. The Bloede Dam removal has opened up more than 104 kilometres of spawning grounds in the Patapsco-Chesapeake watershed for American and hickory shad, alewife and blueback herring and more than 194 kilometres for American eel! This river restoration project will improve fish habitats, fishing and help provide other recreational opportunities for local communities.
We hope more projects and removals stem from actions and conservation efforts like these! Who is removing dams on May 16, 2020??
