As a new Civil Engineer navigating the (new to me) discipline of fisheries and water resource management, I am gaining first-hand knowledge of the importance of fish migration. In July, I will be partaking in RAGBRAI, a 424-mile bike ride across my home state of Iowa. While Iowa is known for its flat farmland, the route chosen for this year’s ride will challenge participants with 18,737 feet of climb, meaning I am going to need significant training. As I train for RAGBRAI 2024, I plan to help raise awareness about migratory fishes and the distance that they can migrate in freer-flowing rivers. Between January 1st and April 30th, 2024, I plan to ride 1,000 km, representing the long-range spawning migrations of Sturgeon species.
