Salaca is a main salmon river in Baltic Sea Assessment Unite 5. According to scientific advice of International Council of Exploration of the Sea (ICES), rivers in Assessment Unite 5 are particularly weak, and several have shown limited recovery to previous reductions in exploitation rates at sea. ICES advised, that weak salmon rivers need longer term, stock-specific rebuilding measures, including restrictions in commercial and recreational fisheries in estuaries and rivers, habitat restoration, and the removal of physical barriers.

The main idea of the workshop is to demonstrate a progress made to improve a salmon population stock in in River Salaca and discuss the possible next steps.

In the workshop series of activities will be carried out in different places close to River Salaca.

1)    Participation in scientific survey of salmon smolt counting

2)    Visiting of salmon habitat restoration places

3)    Demonstration of salmon migration studies. Participants (together with experts from BIOR) will try to find salmons tagged with telemetric tags.

4)    Final discussion in Staicele where the only obstacle in River Salaca is located.

The obstacle in River Salaca is a national industrial heritage
