Papahana Kuaola, located in the ahupuaʻa of Heʻeia is an aloha ʻāina-based education organization connecting our past with a sustainable future.

The He‘eia National Estuarine Research Reserve encompasses 1,385 acres on windward O‘ahu with multiple unique aquatic ecosystems where federal, state, and community-based partners contribute to the restoration and study of watershed and estuary characteristics and Indigenous aquaculture. The Reserve includes He‘eia Stream, coral reefs, sand flats, an ancient Hawaiian fishpond, as well as traditional agricultural and heritage lands. It is home to the endangered Hawaiian stilt, moorhen, coot, and duck. The University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa’s Hawai‘i Institute of Marine Biology is the lead partner with an administrative center located on Moku O Lo‘e (Coconut Island) within the Reserve.

The Hawaii Fish Habitat Partnership is composed of a diverse group of partners that plan and implement a technically sound statewide aquatic habitat restoration program with a special focus on inland waters including streams, wetlands, and estuaries. Our partners include local watershed coalitions; private landowners who seek to establish sustainable aquatic resource management practices on their lands; federal and State aquatic resource agencies; and Native Hawaiian groups that seek to preserve aquatic resources as a cultural and natural resource legacy.
