In het kader van de World Fish Migration Day (WFMD), waarbij wereldwijd aandacht wordt geschonken aan het belang van vrije migratieroutes voor vissen, kun je op maandag 27 mei langs de hele kust plaatsen bezoeken waar glasaal wordt geteld. Tijdstip: een halfuur na zonsondergang.

Sinds 2014 trotseren honderden vrijwilligers jaarlijks van februari tot juni weer en wind om langs de Nederlandse kustlijn intrekkende glasaaltjes (jonge palingen) te tellen. Belangrijk werk, want deze data geven ons een goed beeld over hoe het gaat met de paling. Vind je het leuk om te kijken hoe dit in zijn werk gaat? Kruisnetten langs de kustlijn
De glasalen worden op tientallen locaties en in verschillende samenwerkingsverbanden geteld met behulp van kruisnetten, voor een groot deel door vrijwilligers. Dit gebeurt bij obstakels op de migratieroute, zoals gemalen en sluizen. Hiermee worden de migratieknelpunten voor glasaal en andere soorten, zoals de driedoornige stekelbaars, in beeld gebracht. Zo kunnen waterbeheerders maatregelen nemen om de intrekmogelijkheden te verbeteren. Dankzij de verzamelde gegevens kunnen we ook trends volgen en zien of de soort zich herstelt.

In the context of the World Fish Migration Day (WFMD), we would like to introduce you to the national volunteer based glass eel migration research of RAVON (reptile, amphibian and fish research NGO for the Netherlands). On Monday, May 27th, you have the opportunity to visit the research locations and see how our volunteers catch and count glass eels and other fish. The event starts half an hour after sunset.

Since 2014, hundreds of volunteers have courageously dedicated themselves to counting migrating glass eels (young eels) along the Dutch coastline, enduring the elements from February to June each year. This task is crucial as it provides valuable data for understanding the dynamics of the eel population and its migratory routes. Interested in witnessing this process? You’re welcome to do so! Collecting data along the Dutch coastline
Cross-nets are deployed along the coastline for counting purposes. At numerous locations and through collaborative efforts, volunteers utilize these nets to count glass eels. These efforts take place at obstacles along the migration route, such as pumping stations and sluices. This method helps identify migration bottlenecks, not only for glass eels but also for other species like the three-spined stickleback. Based on our findings, water managers can implement measures to enhance migration opportunities. The data collected also enables us to monitor trends and assess whether the species is recovering.
