River Herring Counts on the Monument/Herring River

River Herring Counts on the Monument/Herring River

35 35 people viewed this event.

Every year, volunteer citizen scientists participate in a manual count of river herring moving from the Cape Cod Canal through the Monument River and into Great & Little Herring Ponds.  Blueback and Alewife river herring spawn in the river and ponds.  They are counted by an electronic counter and our volunteers.  Data we generate becomes part of a study of river herring runs in Eastern New England.
