World Fish Migration Day
Since 1934, the Afsluitdijk has protected the Dutch coast from flooding. However, for migratory fish that depend on both fresh and saltwater during their life cycle, the Afsluitdijk is a major barrier.
Thankfully, ecologists and engineers have worked together on an innovative project: the Fish Migration River. This fish passage is truly unique, as it is the first of its kind in terms of scale and complexity. It is expected to open in the spring of 2027. Read more about the Fish Migration River.
To celebrate World Fish Migration Day, the Waddenvereniging, It Fryske Gea and the Province of Fryslân want to organize a special program at the location of the Fish Migration River. This program includes a guided tour of the construction site of the Fish Migration River, as well as admission to the interactive exhibition in Afsluitdijk Wadden Center. Here you can learn more about the UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea, and the Afsluitdijk.
Tickets are now for sale! Book your guided tour here. Please note that this is a paid event with a limited number of tickets available, and that all talks will be given in Dutch. Participants must be at least 16 years old and able to walk independently during the tour.
